Good job on presentations everyone! I particularly enjoyed Brent’s presentation on applying knot theory to polymer chemistry. This is some exciting stuff, to see pure areas of mathematics find their applications in other research areas and maybe even industry. I have learned about phrase transitions in polymer materials and geometrized ways to simulate and work on real life examples of knots. This was very interesting!

I agree with the thought on applied pure mathematics. I imagine that code was tricky to deal with, but then again I am not a coder. I definitely admire people that can dig into the specifics, which is why I liked Brent’s talk, because I have a hard time doing that.

I thought Brent’s presentation was interesting as well. It was cool to see how he checked knot invariants as a way of making sure that his Monte Carlo simulations had not caused the polymer to change into a different knot. I am interested in seeing what more computations will show.
